The new adventures of Ian and Lyle : Episode 3

Its a very quiet morning. Ashley is gone to work already,Alyssa is at drama camp(as if she needs any help with that department), Ian,Lyle, and Wes went to Fantasy Island, Cameron and Dakota spent the night somewhere(I think, I never know whats up with them ), and Timmy probably just went to bed a couple hours ago,so he'll be asleep for a while. So , its just me, the computer, and some coffee. The house is clean , dishes done ,its raining so I cant do laundry or walk, and I dont have to cook for anyone all day, wow! I think i'll catch up on some reading.
Well, back to yesterday and the title of this post. It was a pretty quiet day yesterday also, Alyssa has been gone all week from 9-2(funny how one child out of 7 makes such a big difference) The little boys went out early to ride bikes and they were gone all morning. When they came back into the house I went out to the kitchen to see what was up, and I was met with 2 sets of eyes peeking out of bodies covered with clay/mud, at least 1/4in thick covering everywhere even their hair.( they looked like Arnold in Predator minus the guns...) Anyways, they had the idea that they would jump in the van so I could take them to the creek to wash off. No Way! I did enjoy spraying them off with the ice cold garden hose. They still had to take showers after that to get it out of their hair.Lyle even had mud way down in his ears that I had to dig out. They didnt get yelled at,I thought it was rather funny, until Ian was spraying off his shoes with the hose, and I told him to give me back the hose so I could spray off his back some more. Well he gave me back the hose and soaked the whole front of my shirt, I did yell alittle then. (and once again I was caught with no camera) Have a good weekend.

Walking

This morning after walking I tried my best to total up how many miles we have done so far. The total so far is 1,053. I'm sure you all have miles that I don't know about so get them to me and I'll add those in. We have just 40 days left to make it to 2,500. That's 1,447. That's about 37 miles a day! I guess I better get out and do a few more today! It's a great walking day here. It rained last night so it's nice and cool, all the plants are so pretty with the rain drops on them. I saw a snail on the sidewalk this morning, it had the funnies looking shell, I wish I had my camera with me. You always see those things when you don't have one with you! Have a great day everyone!

Tami and the jeep and the beach

Well, we are home and glad... but we miss New York already. That's how it goes sometimes.

(Tami misses the Jeep too. I had to take it back to the rental place.)

We had a great time with great people! YOU!

party

just some pictures from the party and wanted to let you know that i walked about 38 miles in the past few weeks...

What next?

Well the party is over and everything is cleaned up and back to normal. So this morning I was trying to figure out what I would do with myself now. Then the mail came and the book Tami and Phil sent me was here(thanks), so now Im gonna go out on the patio with some coffee and read, its not even raining yet today! I thought it was a fun party,im just sorry everybody couldnt make it. Were looking forward to Nov. now. We walked more than I thought last week,we did 30 miles. Tami thanks for the herbs they smell sooo good, Im excited and amazed that you grew so much in your little garden. I on the other hand have decided I am not a farmer or even a small scale gardener, Im more of a hunter/gather/forager. If we had to live on what has grown in my garden this year,we would be pretty hungry, but I do have a freezer full of wild raspberries ,wild onions, and violet jelly. Have a good, afternoon

Runny Nose

All the kids have runny noses, I was thinking it was from our four mile hike on sunday and allergies but today the fever came so that could explain the crankies and all the whining. We ahve just been lazy and busya little of both. Yesterady I did nothing and watched a bunch of shows that I had recorded onthe DVR and than today got all the cleaning done.I am sure glad we dont have lice althought Ruben needs and haircut and his dad keeps saying hw will do it and hasn't it been two weeks so tonite while he is a soccer practice i think I am going to try, hopefully nothing to bad will happen. We walked 32 miles last week, and we are off to a good start this week. So I hopeveryone has a great evening, and good luck wedding shopping it soulds like it is going to be tons of fun!!

Hi from Gram

I just got back from Gowanda. I went for a walk with Sandi, Ashley,Tim and Cameron. I feel like we walked at least 20 miles but Sandi says it was only 2 1/2 miles. I am spending my next half hour in a hot shower. Everything hurts!! I'm not getting old tho. I only sat down once during the walk. I should do it every night but this will take me a week to recover!! Love ya all.

The New Adventures of Ian and Lyle :part 2

Ian, Lyle, Coop, and Tuck were outside playing all day sat. First they were riding down the hill in a big wagon, while doing this they knocked over both of the neighbors filled garbage cans. After that they were running up and down the road from our yard to theirs with their army coats on,and all their weapons strapped on. Then they got the idea to pick all these weeds.(I dont know what they are called ,but they are really tall and if you peel the leaves off they make really good arrows for thier bows) They left the leaves on and they each were running around with a large bundle of these weeds. At the time I thought it was really funny, but what I didnt know was even funnier. They were chasing after the mail man and the garbage man and throwing "spears" at them. All morning Lyle has been asking me when the mailman comes , and I couldnt figure out why. (Hes waiting to throw spears at his car, no wonder the Gowanda police are always sitting on top of our hill watching our house). We'll just call them "Allen St Exts little band of wild Indians". I suppose a good mother would tell them not to be throwing spears at the mail man , instead of laughing and informing them as to what time he'll be around. Have a good day

Preparing

Well, most of my redecorating is done and, most of the decorations for our party are done. Were so excited to host a house full of guests(at least I am, thats what I do). Weve had an interesting week. besides funeral stuff ,shopping and redecorating, one of the kids came home with lice.FUN,We cut everyones hair ,shampooed , did loads of laundry ,blankets, pillows,towels... cleaned , swept ,mopped, Whew! One funny thing that came out of it (well he doesnt think its funny) but anyways when I was cutting Timmys hair the guard for the clippers fell off, so he has a 2 inch bald spot in the back of his head. ( I told him I could write his name or something in the back or give him a mohawk). Hes getting lots of use out of his Yankees hat. Alyssa went camping with her friend for 4 days. Ash and i went shopping for bridesmaid dresses we bought 7 different ones and she put them on line to see if the girls like any of them, because noone is around to shop with her.We found some cheap, cute, short, beachy type dresses, not anything formal, and shes looking for a plain white, flowy, beachy type dress, not a wedding dress(she tried one wedding dress on and she said it was way too heavy to wear). If she can find one similar to the ones we bought already she'll have gotten all 5 dresses for less than $100. (good shopping!) As for location were looking at evangola state park. Ashleys been working on making their invitations.
Camerons been working and going to lacrosse and football practice, hes been pretty busy. Ive been working on some rugs, and decorations for the party, and watching my garden grow slowly(theres about 6 summer squash coming, 8 tomatoes,a few pumpkins and some potatoes) .We walked 20miles this week. Were going to see Harry Potter this afternoon. Oh yeah, guess whos going back to work monday? (go figure?must be Im too much of a slave driver) love you guys

Engagement Pictures

Here are the rest of me and amy's pictures.......yeah

WhiggingOut!!

This weather really has me messed up. Im geting my fall creative, busy, change feelings now,in the middle of July?Anyways, I went and bought new furniture for the liviing room and the kitchen, and had ideas for a few small decorating projects, most of which I can do myself. Herein lies my problem. My "partner" totally speaks a different language than I do.(i speak artist, woman,he speakes carpenter, man) He also has worked for the union and by the hour so long, that simple projects take days,weeks,months... I dont understand how 5 screws and one 1'x4' piece of wood constitutes a whole day of work, and why on earth does everything have to touch the walls(who puts a coffe table on the opposite wall of a couch?), and why when new furniture comes into the house you still have to make room for the crap furniture some where? Well thats my vent and why Im whigging out. Im trying to communicate what I need and want calmly, but while Im doing that, my whole body is just crawling with inpatience and aggravation, and my head is pounding. Poor Wes probably whishes he was working.

edible plants

taraxacum officinaleDandelion. The young unfolding greens in the center are great raw. The entire plant can be steamed. The flower is the best part. Pick it off the stem, and with your fingers pinch off the green base of the flower, so there's no white sap (the sap is very bitter). You're left with a sweet, meaty, filling wild food that can be found in incredible abundance.

stellaria mediaChickweed. The entire plant can be eaten raw. It has a sweet, grassy flavor. If you want to avoid the stems, and eat mostly the new growth, pluck off the tops and eat those.

oxalis spp.Wood Sorrel. The whole plant is great raw - it has a nice acid flavor, refreshing. The flowers of the cosmopolitan weeds are yellow, but many varieties grow in the wild with pinkish flowers. This is a plant extremely common not only in lawns and cleared areas, but also deep in the wilderness.

lamium amplexicauleHenbit. Another plant entirely edible raw. It's a Lamium, a very mild mint. Like chickweed, it has a sweet, grassy flavor - pluck off the tops to avoid the stems. This plant will form huge carpets in places, very early in the year, with an understory of chickweed beneath it.

lamium purpureumDead-nettle. Another Lamium, just like henbit. It's eaten the same way - and will also form huge carpets covering the ground, especially in spring.

plantago lanceolataPlantain. Young leaves in the center are good raw - have a slight salty flavor. There's both a common and an English plantain, that are very similar.

sonchus spp.Sow thistle. The young leaves are decent - treat it like dandelion, and try and avoid the bitter latex sap. Sow thistle has excellent yellow flowers very similar to dandelion, yet even better, that's prepared the same way and eaten raw. Unlike dandelion, sow thistle has an upright stalk and a more prickly-looking thistle-like appearance.

allium spp.Wild onion. Very common in areas that are mowed. A very mild onion that is excellent raw. Harvest bunches of it and use it just like scallions.

cardamine spp.Cress. This is one of the many wild plants in the mustard family common in cities. When young, the leaves are excellent raw, with a mild mustard flavor. As they get older the full plants can be steamed, just as you would prepare mustard greens at home.

In our prayers

Wow Sandi your family sure has been through a lot! We are praying for all of you. Do you know what happened to Ash and Tim's friend? Things have been pretty quiet here. We were suppose to have bad storms here Sunday and Monday, but they never came. Phil and I drove all the way to OH to camp so we could stay out of the rain. It was worth it, we had a really good time. I was super tired at work today though! I have done a good job of letting you guys know how we are doing with our walking. our total for June 21-July4th was 243 miles. I haven't figured up anything past that. I'll figure it out and let you know. I'll post some pictures of our camping trip later. Love you all! Tami

when i'm bored

thunder and lightening

Its been storming all day, heavy rain ,terrible thunder and lightening, the kids and I have spent half the day cowering under the covers of my bed.The storms stopped just long enough for the wedding and grad party that we had to go to ,but right after we left the grad party electrical wires came down, and just down the road from the wedding a tree and lines fell on a car with people in it,and everything is pretty flooded. A friend of Ashleys and Timmys, (Dan Miller)that they went to school with and youth group at church and Houghton with , was in a ROTC overnight training wed night and he came up missing at 2 am thursday morning and they found his body at 9am. So keep Ash and the youth group and his family(their dad died 3 years ago during the church picnic)in your thoughts and prayers. Love you guys

Hi from Perrysburg

Another week gone by already! Looks like you have been having loads of fun Brandi! Tam, I sure would have felt exactly like you did. Every year we have to sell Fantasy Island and Darian Lake tickets at work. I count that darn money every day and sweat bullets til I get it out of my hands. I worked about an hour overtime again tonight and then went to the park for music. Blackmons sat with me and we had a nice time. I tried to call Daaron and wish him a happy birthday tonight when I got home but no answer. He was going to have a pirate party. Jay for some reason I can never see your things you send. It's either my computer or my ignorance probably a bit of both. I Send my love to you all. It has been a really nice day. Gram and Gramp T are coming for 4 days. They will be here Sun afternoon. Pray for me. BYE BYE

What a Week

We havent really done that much but I guess we were looking at the pictures onthe camera and we have been busy. We had a pool day a birthday party, the zoo, and just somegoofing around inthe house. Then the fourth of July fireworks. Today we have went shopping and ate a chik fil a twice, Ruben had school and then the police were in and out of the office all day investigating about the self employed lock smiths from Israel who live here. I think they moved out already with out paying. It is so crazy. I am making meatloaf and roasted veggies right now while we wait for Ruben to get home. Then I am hoping to go grocery shopping and to church we'll see if we can fit it all in. Dont have much to say just wanted to say hi to everyone. Love you guys!

$160.00!!!!!!

Camping sounds like so much fun! We are planning to camp at Evangola when we come up in a couple of weeks. I can't wait. I hope I don't see any coyotes though! I'll be sleeping in the car too!

I've been back to work for a week now. It's taking me some time to get back into the swing of things! I thought I was going to get fired yesterday. Probably good enough that I'd never be able to get another job! I have to count the safe everyday when I get to work, and before I leave everyday. I also do the bank deposit most days and get any change that we need. The safe always has the same amount of money in it, that's how it's supposed to be. Well, I counted in yesterday, everything was good, I took care of my shift, did the deposit, got the change order. It was a really big change order! It's like lifting weights! I finished my shift and counted the safe. $160.00 short, I counted it again, still short, I asked the guy who was taking my place to count it, still short. I looked in my purse hoping that I had left some in there, nope, went to the truck hoping it had fallen out of my purse, nope. I drove to the bank and told them my situation and of course they told me that I would have to wait until they counted drawers after close and that all of the managers were in a meeting so they could not help me. I went back to Starbucks, called my manager, she didn't answer, so I left, 2 hours after I was suppose to be done. Later my manager called and told me not to worry about it, (easy for her to say!) . I worried all evening! I got a call later saying that the bank was exactly $160! However the money is still not back in the safe, and won't be until at least tomorrow. All the big wigs where in my store this morning while I was working and there are notes everywhere saying that the safe is $160 short! Oh well, at least it didn't say "Tami screwed up yesterday so the safe is $160 short". Actually no one said anything, and the bank called and apologized to me. When we have the money back in the safe tomorrow I will feel better but not until then!

Thankfully, I don't have to do the deposit tomorrow! Miss you all, have a great day. Oh, by the way, Jon didn't come home, only part of his unit did. He keeps saying it will be soon, he can't wait!

Cold and Windy

We went camping on the beach, this weekend. Friday and Saturday were really cold and windy, when we were in the tents it sounded and felt like we were going to blow away. The waves were crashing over the break wall,so there was no boating, fishing or swimming for us. Despite that,we had a great time! The beach and lake is so beautiful no matter what season it is. We probably spend more time there during the fall and winter than we do in the summer. Because of the weather we pretty much had the whole beach to ourselves.(except for the two large coyotes Lyle ran into while he was playing.Luckily they were as startled to see him as he was to see them and they were tracking a deer. It really scared Lyle though, and he wouldnt sleep in the tent, he had to sleep in the car.) Actually Lyle had a bit of a rough weekend ,besides the coyote,he also ran into a tree while he was running and his left side of his face is all scratched up.We got to watch fireworks for 3 days from 6-8 different locations all around us, and we had a really nice fire to make smores and pies. Ians been learning how to grill and build fires, so he got in lot of practice this weekend. Sunday the weather finally cleared up and we were able to swim, fish and go canoeing. Cameron had his last regular season box lacrosse game yesterday, he got his first penalty(awwww, Cameron-Although he did get checked(unnoticed by the refs) in the neck just before he checked the guy from behind). They won the game . It was a really nice weekend , but it was really great to come home and sleep in a real bed. WellI have to catch up on picking berries this afternoon, and Alyssa,Dan and Ashley leave for quizzing nationals in Rochester for a week .J, that was pretty funny , and Brandi the powder story was great, thanks for telling us.

Baby Powder

I was so tired I decided to put the kids to bed and let them look at books intheir beds by themselves. I really wanted to take a shower so I told Big Ruben who was watching TV to keep an ear on the kids and if they got out of bed to put them back I was going to enjoy an nice shower. I got out of the shower the kids are quite but I can smell baby powder. I didnt use any after I showered and my soap does not smell like powder so I put my shower stuff away and walk into the kids room where the smell is coming from and there is Ruben jumping for joy with the full bottle of baby powder her is covered all I can see is his little borwn eyes and his big smile. Gwen is covered from head to toe with her blanket and the crib is untouched, but everythin looked like snow had fallen. The bed, floor, changing table, and even the walls and celing fan. I go and get Big Ruben and show him what happened I was not sure to laugh or cry and of course I had to clean it up. The vaccum was just spitting it back out so we had to get the kids out of the room and they all slept in our bedroom on the floor and inthe bed. I swalled a lot of powder and my throat was so soar the next day. I had to wash everything. I still smell powder when I use the vaccuum and the room is permanently powder smell. There are worse things it was an adventure and something I wont forget now that I am thinking about it I am not sure why i did not take nay pictures.

Have a great 4th and enjoy the berries. I am not sure what we wll be doing it is suppose to rain and the park we always go to has decided not to do fireworks this year because of the budget, weird but hopefully we will find something fun to do.

berries

I wish I had some berries! I have no berries, but I have chili peppers! Yummy. Wish my tomatoes would catch up, I could make some really good salsa. Phil and I went out for dinner at Mi Mexico tonight, they had some good salsa! We both ordered different things, but they both came in pineapple halves. Mine had grilled pineapple, chicken, peppers, and onions. Phil's had shrimp, scallops, grilled pineapple, a red sauce and cheese. Sooooo good. Phil as a 4 day weekend, and I have Saturday off and I open Sunday, 5am to 1:30pm, so we get to spend some time together, and since we really can't go any where, he is forced to relax a little, I'm not even sure he remembers how. I hope you all have a great weekend. I think we might go to church, then come back home and barbecue, then watch the fireworks at RJ Corman's. Brandi, you never did tell everyone the baby powder story! ;)

Hi from Gram

It is so nice to read about all your adventures. I had a great day at work today then came home took a short 1/2 hr nap and went to Gowanda to sit in the park and listen to the music. It was very nice not as warm as I'd like but it didn't rain for that hour and a half!!! I also had a hot dog and pop for my supper while I was there. I love hearing about your days. I agree with Brandi that math is tough stuff. I never could understand it but I still manage my check books pretty well guess that's all that counts....Have a great week-end whatever you all are doing. I'm working 12 hours. But that's ok it's time and a half. Only way to look at it. I saw Sandi's little boys last night and they sure were enjoying those berries. In fact they all are berry colored from head to toe. Bless them. Little for such a short time but so precious. Love ya all. Gram

All in a day

It seems likeIve not been accomplishing much of anything lately. This whole week, besides dishes, the only thing Ive been doing is running children to and from jobs and practices, and picking berries. Even though the kids have been eating alot of berries, ALOT, I have 24 sandwich bags of raspberries in my freezer, and there is probably still 3-4 days of picking left. So much good fruit for free, we are greatly blessed. The little boys have been saving their money from working for grandma Gates and picking berries for me(they get .50 a bowl if they bring it to me for the freezer instead of eating it ).We went toy shopping today with their savings. We went to the new toy store in gowanda and both $ stores. We came home with mini skate boards to put together, and the game of battleship. (good choices) . Theyve been in their newclub house all afternoon, and they just brought out a list of NEEDS they have for their club. (food,a mini fridge, rugs, sand for the floor, solar lights, toys, tiki torches....) I made home made corn tortillas ,and enchilladas for dinner tonight. All the camping stuff is washed and packed for this weekend, when ever we decide to go,whenever it stops raining. Love you guys

WOW

I hate Geometry. I just spent 6 hours of my evening working on one assgn. For my math class it was geometry. I am not an expert but I think it took way too long even if I was good at it. I am glad I spen time with the kids this morning and kept them with me instead of at their Grandma today because tonite they got no attention. I felt so bad. Ruben has become a talking machine and gwen want to mop all the time. Addi is all over the floor she would be good at crawling under those chairs with Ian and Lyle. Well I am off to bed luckily mykids went down about an hour ago. My back hurts from sitting here so long. We were suppose to walk tonite at the park but we will have to catch up tomorrow. Love you guys havew a good night.
Brandi

The New Adventures of Ian and Lyle

Even though it rained most of the day today, the boys were very busy! First they lined all the lawn chairs up in a row with a couple laundry baskets in between, and put on their camo clothes, then, in the pouring rain, and cut grass, they were crawling on their bellies under the chairs and over the laundry baskets, timing each other. After their morning drills, they took a tarp and some chairs into the woods and built a club house with 3 of the neighbor kids. Theyve spent the afternoon raiding each others houses for snack for the club house. I heard they have quite a stash of cheereos, chips and apple juice right now and I just overheard that they may have scored smore stuff and hot dogs for tonight. (I hope nobody is planning on any of this food for their weekend parties)
Sandi

Hi

Monday night Phil and I spent time tying and hanging some of my herbs to dry. My garden grew so much while I was away! We tied up tomatoes and did some weeding. It was really relaxing for me. Phil always gives me a hard time about it, but I think he enjoys it too. After we finished those we walked 3 miles.

Yesterday was so beautiful here, the temp was in the 70's, nice and sunny! perfect weather to walk, but I went to bed at 7:00, I was so tired, and I had to be up at 3:45 today to get to work on time. Wow, things have changed a lot! I was totally overwhelmed when I got home. Today was better and I know that it will get better everyday! I just got home a few minutes ago. I'm going to have some lunch and take a little nap so that I can make some dinner for Phil and get some housework done. I wish I could see the kids Sandi, enjoy every minute of it! Love you guys!
Tami

summer

Im so glad its summer vacation and the kids dont have to go to school. I just love watching them play and explore. The little boys are so cute, the neighbor boys came over yesterday afternoon and allfour of them were busy picking berries, they each picked a whole bowl of berries. Then they decided to mix them with sugar and water and make jelly out of their berries, so then they had to make toast and waffles to put the jelly on. Then one of the neighbors boys spent the night and they finished eating the jelly they made and then they made their own lemonade, and popcorn before putting in ghost busters to watch. They were just too cute! This morning before 7:30 the other neighbor boy was knocking on the door so he could have berry cobbler for breakfast with his brother who spent the night. They are just busy all the time when they get together, sometimes theyllget all their army coats on and fill their pockets with rope, pocket knifes, guns, food, and water and they take off for hours in the woods. I guess its really not as cute unless your right their watching it, but I really love watching them. Have a great day.
